Although we perhaps take for granted the internet, and what we can use it for, it has not really been with us for a very long time in its current form. Sure, it has been around in a basic form for twenty years or even more, but it really is only in the last ten years or so that it has had a noticeable impact on society.
Let's take travel as an example. Ten years ago, flights were to be had mainly through travel agencies, and hostels booked by phoning numbers from a Lonely Planet guide book. Nowadays, we take for granted that we are able to search for flights to Darwin and book it online, or are able to book a hostel anywhere in the world from in front of a computer.
Perhaps the most radical way that it has changed travel, though, is by the ease of communication. Time was that a person had to collect a letter from 'poste restante'. This letter was often posted a month or more before the recipient opened it. Email of course changed all that.
Now, no matter where you are in the world, you can be in daily contact with friends and loved ones back home. Email is just the most basic example of this. VOIP providers such as Skype allow free calls and video messaging between people on opposite sides of the globe.
Where the internet will lead travel in the future is anybody's guess. Certainly, as information becomes more widespread, and communication ever easier, more and more people will be tempted to take a year out and visit different parts of the world. With luck, this will lead to more understanding and appreciation of different cultures, and lead to a more peaceful and understanding world.
